The hosts asked Horford, who was on the show with teammate Marvin Williams, if he ever got the chance to clear the air with Pierce after the game.
“I never talked to him,” says Horford, “but I know he owes me money. Marvin was a witness. He was telling me they were going to sweep us and all this. We bet. And I never got anything.”
Asked how much he’s owed, Horford says “ten thousand” and then explains that bet was that the Hawks would not get swept.
Bret LaGree of Hoopinion, who typed up the whole exchange (originally spotted on Peachtree Hoops), says that Williams is a paragon of honesty, and it means something that he immediately seconds Horford’s version of events by saying “true story.”
I suspect few people care about players, in the heat of the battle, saying in no uncertain terms that they believe in their teams.
But anyone who has ever heard the name “Pete Rose” knows that people get weirded out by the idea of players betting on games they play in, and not without reason. As much as $10k here or there to go with a win might be fun and harmless, there’s danger in players looking to profit from gambling — because the real money in that game is in betting that your team will lose, and then helping them do so, and nobody is OK with that. That’s far from what happened here, but the NBA has to draw the line somewhere.
While I am not worried abotu gambling in the sport and someone throwing games, I am more worried about people welshing on the bets that they were brave enough to make before knowing the end results. Pay what you owe and nobody will get hurt.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — For $25,000, you can watch the New Jersey Nets from courtside — and have a player stop by your son’s birthday party.
In a tough economy, it’s the Nets’ latest marketing effort to sell its pricey courtside seats. It’s called ‘Your Ticket to a Player.’
For $25,000, the Nets are offering four courtside tickets for 10 games, parking, access to a private lounge at the Izod Center with free food and beverages and something more — a one-hour appearance by a Nets player of your choice at your home, office, school or party.
“It will be interesting to have an NBA player come to your birthday party or come to your Bar Mitzvah or even just coming to your house for dinner for an hour when your friends are over,” Nets chief executive Brett Yormark said. “That’s a terrific thing and it’s tough to put a price tag on it.”
The package offers a discount: Purchased individually, Nets courtside seats sell for $750 each and 40 would cost $30,000.
Yormark said the idea for the courtside plan developed because he had an inventory of courtside seats that he wanted to sell and he frequently gets calls from season-ticket holders and fans about having a player attend an event.
Players will not be compensated for the one-hour visits, the Nets said.
“It helps everybody to have more fans at our games, so if the players can make a difference by meeting with ticket buyers at their homes or offices, we are happy to participate,” Nets All-Star guard Devin Harris said.
While Harris is the most popular Nets player, Yormark said not everyone will get their top choice of players for an appearance.
The Nets hope to sell 20 plans, which would raise $500,000.
Yormark said teams have to find different ways to sell tickets in a recession. He believes the Nets are the first NBA team to package tickets sales with a player appearance.
“I tell people if you are doing business the same way you did a year ago, you have to stop it because that’s not the world we live in today,” Yormark said. “A lot of people say it, but it’s really true in the world we live in today. You have to do things differently. Things have to be more special and different than before and that’s our goal.”
Two months ago, the Nets unveiled a special 10-game “Match-Up” ticket plan under which fans got a collection of reversible jerseys with the uniforms of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Dwyane Wade and Dwight Howard on one side and the jersey of the Nets’ player on the other side.
“It’s been the best partial-plan seller since I’ve been here,” Yormark said. “Fans love it. Kids are loving the jerseys. It’s something that is going to live all season for us. It’s going to be an anchor to our ticket sales effort.” Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press
Once you make it, you usually hear of players talking about taking their parents out the hood and buying them a big, new house and a bright shiny car. Players are clearly not obligated to do that. But, you should have an obligation to NOT RIP THEM OFF! Rumeal must have been sleeping during that ethics lesson in life, since he did just that.
CAMBRIDGE – Rumeal Robinson scaled the pinnacle of American sports in April 1989, an ice-in-his-veins basketball player from the streets of Cambridge who sank a pair of pressure-packed free throws to vault the University of Michigan to a storybook national championship.
His tale was the stuff of fantasy: rescued from homelessness at age 10, given shelter and self-esteem by strangers, and presented with a new life that once seemed destined for aimless tragedy when his biological mother abandoned him. He even had the Cambridge street he lived on named after him.
That tale, inspiring and incredible, has taken a shockingly tawdry twist.
His adoptive mother wants the street, Rumeal Robinson Place, stripped of its name and rededicated to her late husband. And she wants a mural of her son, placed in honor near the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School fieldhouse, purged of his glory-days image.
Now, what could have this guy done that is that horrible? He swindled his adoptive mother out of her home…
Nellie has created this Titanic like team on his watch, and for that, he should be fired. Pay him his money, let him go. For disinterested to the team dyanmics and success, but like the NBA, like myself, this train wreck is going to be fun to watch.
SJax versus Nellie! An absoulte wreck already happening....
Also, Whoever text-ed this message, should be fired if it came from the Warriors. That type of subordination is at the heart of what is so dysfunctional with the Warriors. That it came from most likely another coaching staff, then you know how far the product has fallen.
By definition, I think that Mikki got sh@##$ed on with that dunk. It’s also the reason that the Warriors will not amount to much if you let little dudes do this to your entire team….
It looks like the Warriors will lead the league again….in taking shots to the dome….
He beat Mikki like ShamWOW dude beat on that “escort” that he paid for…
When I was in college, I would take the day of release off. No school, no work, no girlfriend….just the game and my buds and my buds….(just kidding kids, don’t do drugs…) The latest incarnation of the game is out and it is shaping up to be deadly…in a good way.
Spike has his hands in a lot...
NBA 2K10 Review
One decade later, it’s still the game to beat.
by Jeff HaynesOctober 5, 2009 – Although EA Sports has held the crown for most sports games, the NBA 2K series has still been the gold standard when it comes to basketball simulation. With excellent presentation values, solid on and off court play (thanks to its franchise mode) and an incredibly rich amount of features, 2K has frequently held off its competitors, who have lagged behind with disappointing installments in the past. With the ten year anniversary of the franchise slated for this year, 2K Sports had more of a reason to maintain their dominance. Plus, with Sony’s first party game taking a year off in the development leagues and NBA Live raising the level of its game, the burden was on them to prove why their game was the best around. Fortunately, NBA 2K10 will not disappoint fans of the series, even with some annoying problems that can try your patience.
As what happens at this time, I will be copping the game tonight. Unfortunately, since I have a meeting tomorrow morning, I will not call in sick, but Lord knows, I want to….
and another question is “Lebron, why are you a snitch?” That is all you did here…Either hire someone to beat him down, or for a better suggestion, just do it yourself. If one of my boys get decked in a fight,we would be riding for the dude that did it.
Maybe this is the way to bring a championship to CLE....
When you have nothing to say, sometimes you grab for anything. In being interviewed, LeBron called Braylon Edwards childish for allegedly hitting a friend of his.
BEREA, Ohio (AP)—LeBron James called Browns receiver Braylon Edwards(notes) “childish” for allegedly punching James’ friend early Monday morning outside of a Cleveland night club.
James said Edwards punched Edward Givens, a friend of James’ and a promoter with a Cleveland marketing firm who was working outside the club around 2:30 a.m. EDT.
The world does not revolve around you Lebron. In fact a lot of people just don't care and are not jealous of you.
“I’ve never crossed paths with Braylon before, but it seems like there’s a little jealousy going on with Braylon and me and my friends. I have no idea why,” James said. “I’ve never said anything to Braylon at all. But for him to do that is very childish. My friend is 130 pounds. Seriously. It’s like hitting one of my kids. It doesn’t make sense.”
James says he was home when the fight occurred, but got a call from Givens telling him about it at 7 a.m. Monday.
LeBron, it sounds like this dude is one of your kids. Why is he calling you that early in the morning to talk about what happened at the club? Did he stay out past his curfew? It makes sense if dude was talking slick. He is old enough to be responsible for what he says.
This reminds me of what happened to Erik when he went to the CAL game this weekend. (To make a long story short, this old dude thought that he could check Erik with repercussions. He was wrong … E almost had to beat an old dude down in front of his father.) Bottom line, if someone puts his hands on you, or says something slick, then all bets are off.
maybe less time on the sidekick and more time watching where you are going would have prevented you from getting smacked up....this is a promotional picture of the firm that LBJ's friend works at. Not sure which he is, but he got bruised up!
Browns coach Eric Mangini said he has spoken with Braylon Edwards about the alleged fight.
I wonder what Coach said….I would have said something like, “Where was that fight during the game, since we lost and you didn’t catch a single pass, even though Anderson threw for 269 yards?”
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that a 28-year-old man accused Edwards of punching him in the face following an argument. The man said Edwards hit him with a closed fist. He said he suffered a black eye and cut and was treated at a hospital.
Why is this part news? Did he expect to be hit with an open fist in a slapping motion?
he does look pretty satisfied.....
Mangini said he was aware of the incident. He added his players’ personal conduct is important and that he was still gathering information on the incident.
Edwards did not catch a pass in Sunday’s 23-20 overtime loss to Cincinnati. It was the first time in 62 career games Edwards did not have at least one reception.
So, it might have changed Braylon’s game, hopefully LBJ will not let it change his game.
true story kids....stay in school and do your homework
kids, this is why you should stay in school and get your education and degree.
This is not to insult those who work at fast food, but it should rarely be looked at a career. It is a grind that you have to work until the day comes to work something better.
R.I.P. Steve McNair, but this is bigger than the loss of a good man and a better QB. You are getting played bro, and you only have a few more days to come to your senses.
I really don’t care that you are marrying Chyna. That is your business. But, I want you to remember that she has a thing for Black athletes. Maybe she wants to outdo Kim and have a man that actually can win something as a pro. You qualify.
Look at the Donald. He went broke, got rich again and didn't have to give out his stacks....
Even at his bachelor party last night, Laker Lamar Odom was on his best behavior with his best bros.
While he decided to cancel the big bash at Les Deux that was originally planned, he opted for a small dinner party at STK with Joe Francis, RobKardashian, Scott Disick (aka Kourtney Kardashian’s baby daddy), fellow Lakers Ron Artest, Sasha Vujacic, Josh Powell and D.J. Mbenga.
Kobe stood you up? It’s because he knows you are making a mistake. For all that everyone says about Kobe, at least he has a family and his wife seems to be in charge of the family while Kobe is ballin outta control.
Lamar’s crew was even joined by some Clippers, including Baron Davis, Marcus Camby and rookie Blake Griffin, who just happened to be having their own party at the club.
Of course they came to the party, because they want to hang out with winners.
Joe, Scott and Rob held court at a table in the main dining room, while Lamar mostly mingled with his basketball boys in the bar area.
Despite one pretty partyer who approached him, Lamar showed little interest in any ladies. Girls were even banned from their booths at Guys & Dolls later in the night. Way to regulate!
See? This is what I mean. You had Joe F. ready to throw you a huge blowout with strippers, hookers and…well what else do you want? Kobe and more of the Lakers might have shown up for the party if it was this type of party.
The only complaint guests might have?
Lamar was tardy to his own party! Teammate Derek Fisher showed at STK at 9 p.m. and waited for Lamar for an hour before ditching to head home to his wife and kids.
Before he left, though, Fisher said he planned to get Odom a whopper of a wedding present: “How about another [NBA championship] ring!”
After dinner, Lamar, Rob, Scott and some Lakers who stayed headed over to Guys & Dolls, where Ron made a toast to his teammate. The guys drank magnums of Ace of Spades champagne.
Lamar was in great spirits, dancing and taking photos with fans. Before calling it a night, he requested Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s “Bonnie and Clyde,” perhaps as a tribute to himself and the bride-to-be.
Another reason why I dislike what you are doing Lamar. Really? At least play the damn original with Tupac. The damn song is about gun love and Jay f’ed up the whole song. Listen to the REAL song.
Although there was a fight that broke out while the boys were inside partying, a source says they weren’t involved.
Remember that other fight that went down at Guys, between Jayde Nicole and Joe Francis?
Speaking of that lawsuit-inducing spat, Jayde’s boyfriend and defender, Brody Jenner, happens to be Khloé’s stepbrother, who wasn’t spotted at the bachelor party last night.
Since Joe threw the party last night, we’re assuming he’s invited to the wedding. And we know Brody’s attending.
The people making the seating chart should have their work cut out for them.
IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING A CIRCUS UNFOLD. NOW THAT KHLOE KARDASHIAN HAS ANNOUNCED THE WEDDING, I CAN NO LONGER BE QUIET. I HAVE BEEN WITH LAMAR FOR YEARS. YES WE F*CK. YES HE PAYS MY BILLS. YES…… I HAVE AN APARTMENT. YES HE HAS BOUGHT ME A CAR. YES I WAS WITH HIM EVEN WHEN HE WAS WITH HIS BABY MAMA. SOME PEOPLE CALL ME A JUMP OFF. I KNOW WE HAVE A CONNECTION. I HAVE NOT TALKED TO HIM IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS, BUT HE WILL BE BACK. HE ALWAYS COMES BACK.
Yes, you are a jump-off. You give him the freedom to roam like a free safety on Sunday.
I SEE THAT THE KARDASHIANS HAVE MANIPULATED THIS SITUATION, MADE THIS A FAIRYTALE.
LET ME TELL YOU THE TRUTH.
LAMAR ODOM IS A DOG. HE CANNOT BE FAITHFUL TO ONE WOMAN. PERIOD. HE WILL WAKE UP IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND WILL REALIZE HE HAS F*CKED HIMSELF. LAMAR IS UNSTABLE. LAMAR IS BIPOLAR. LAMAR HAS GIRLS IN EVERY CITY. KHLOE AND HER FAMILY MAY THINK THEY HAVE STRUCK GOLD – BUT WHEN HE TRAVELS DURING THE SEASON, HE WILL F*CK AROUND. HE HAS F*CKED HER FRIENDS BEFORE THEY EVEN MET. I KNOW MY SITUATION AND I DEAL WITH IT, BUT I AM NOT OKAY WITH THE KARDASHIANS PRETENDING HE IS SOMETHING HE IS NOT.
I DO NOT LIKE HIS BABY MAMA, LIZA. BUT I KNOW HE DID HER DIRTY. WHEN HIS SON PASSED AWAY, HE WASN’T WITH HER. HE WAS WITH ME. HE DOESN’T SPEND TIME WITH THE KIDS. DOES NOT PAY CHILD SUPPORT. OBVIOUSLY, HE HAS LOST HIS MIND BECAUSE HE DOES NOT CARE THAT THE KIDS ARE IN SHOCK. WILL NOT ATTEND THEIR OWN DAD’S WEDDING. HE IS RUINING HIS FAMILY AND HIS CHILDREN’S LIVES FOR THIS TRICK NAMED KHLOE. NBA AND NFL D*CK HAS RAN THROUGH THAT. SIX DEGREES OF KHLOE KARDASHIAN. LOOK AT THEIR GOLD DIGGING MOTHER. SHE WHORES OUT HER OWN CHILDREN. I HEAR FROM HIS PEOPLE THAT THERE IS NO PRENUP. WHAT AN IDIOT. I HOPE HE IS BROKE FROM THIS. BETTER BELIEVE I WILL MAKE SURE I CASH OUT BEFORE ALL OF IT IS GONE. HE DID SIGN A HUGE CONTRACT, AFTER ALL.
Damn, Lamar, I didn't know you were this naive...
HIS FAMILY WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. HE IS TURNING HIS BACK ON HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS. PUT IT LIKE THIS, IF YOU ARE BROKE AND BLACK – YOU ARE NO LONGER IN HIS LIFE. TRUE LOVE MY @SS. TAKE NOTE HOW NO BLACK PEOPLE WILL BE THERE. MAYBE A SPRINKLE OF THE ACCEPTABLE ONES THAT KRIS APPROVES OF.
LO, how are you just going to get your business out in the street? Even if the “wedding” is just a stunt for the failing ratings of the show, you are put on front street as a clown. STEP YOUR GAME UP! You are better than this!
If you believe the hype he is going to be joining a playoff contending team in the ATL…This is the word on the street from the ATL Journal and Constitution…
THE WAFER RULE
Day after day veteran free agent Jerry Stackhouse turns heads during these informal workouts.
I haven’t found a player yet that isn’t convinced that he could help this Hawks team this season as versatile specialists off the bench.
Whether or not that connection ever comes to fruition is obviously not up to said players or any of us around here.
But let me offer up a cautionary tale about watching a free agent dazzle on the practice court all summer only to find work elsewhere once training camp rolls around. Von Wafer [breakout season in Houston last year and now a teammate of former Hawks swingman Josh Childress in Greece] put on a somewhat similar type of show last summer, wowing everyone with his shooting stroke from deep and his ability to finish at the rim without any regard for whoever and whatever might be in his way.
Wafer would have helped this Hawks team tremendously last year but a decision was made to go in a different direction (one that, it should be pointed out, helped net 47 wins). It’ll be interesting to see if the Hawks look past Stackhouse (for whatever reasons) and break the Wafer Rule.
It’s not my decision, my team, my money or my main concern right now. But I don’t know that I’d be able to rationalize not trying to sign Stackhouse up if he goes anywhere this season and plays half as well as he’s played since I’ve been watching this summer.
Who doesn’t need another shooter off the bench? Lakers, are you listening? With the way that Vujacic finished last year, adding Stack would be all peaches and cream. That would be a perfect guy to help run the second unit on the floor. I would rather have him with me, then worry about having him against me…
There can only be one. None of this co-favorite cop-out. Despite losing its top four scorers, UNC gets the nod to claim the ACC crown over rival Duke and a possibly potent pair, Gary Parrish says.
Don't expect three No. 1 seeds from the Big East again. The league lost a lot of quality players, but with 16 teams and a few bright stars remaining, it will still be fun, Gary Parrish says.
Confusing NCAA rules aside, Gary Parrish can't wait for the season, if for no other reason than Kentucky's John Wall. The freshman highlights a revamped roster that should lead Coach Cal to an SEC title.
Isiah Thomas lost his coaching debut at Florida International on Wednesday night when Northwood, an NAIA school coached by Rollie Massimino, beat the Panthers 71-61 in an exhibition game.
